Installing Flash Player Plugin on Firefox without having Administrator Access or Premissions
UPDATE: The following guide, originally written for Firefox 2, has been used successfully on Firefox 3, 3.5, 3.6, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. Users of Firefox Portable edition (same versions) also have been successful using this guide.
The Windows computers available at my University permits login only by autenticated users (students) who don't have Administrator access and permissions.
Installing software on those PC is then not possible.
Recently they finally installed Firefox 2 but without the Flash plugins, which is absolutly useful/needed.
I then tryed to install the Flash Player using the "standard" way (click on the missing plugin link then install the plugin..). However without administrator plugins it was not possible to install.
Then I started doing some tests trying to install the plugin manually. Now I have it installed and working perfectly!
This is how I managed to install it without administrator permissions:
- Download this ZIP archive to your hard disk.
- Extract the file in the archive. You can use any program capable of opening .zip files (WinZip, WinRAR or the free and great 7-zip). There are also websites which can uncompress archives: wobzip.org.
- Copy the file NPSWF32.dll to %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Plugins\
- %APPDATA% is not a real folder. It's an alias. By inserting it in your windows explorer address bar, you'll be redirected to the real folder which holds your applications profiles and settings. The location of this folder depends on various setting that's why we need the alias and not an absolute path.
- You can open this folder simply choosing "Start → Run → Type in %APPDATA% → OK".
- In case you don't have a Plugins folder you can create one and place your files there.
- Restart Firefox
- Enjoy your flash websites!

Question
How do i do this at Internet Explorer???
I'm sorry. But we are not
I'm sorry. But we are not aware of a procedure like the one described in the article for Internet Explorer.
If you don't have Firefox installed you can use Firefox Portable. There are old comments below (check also the older pages) whose describe how to use Firefox Portable.
When i try to copy the file
When i try to copy the file to %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Plugins\ an alert shows up saying that the operation is not supported. I have no clue what i should be doing.
Hi, It doesn't work because
Hi,
It doesn't work because the "Plugins" folder is not created.
Try to insert in Windows Explorer : "%APPDATA%\Mozilla\" and then create the folder just there. After that just paste the file requested in the istructions.
restart Firefox finaly and all donne.
Good Luck
Unfortunately I think your
Unfortunately I think your computer is too restricted and you can't use the procedure described in the article.
Please check the following: try to create a bookmark in Firefox, and then close the browser, then reopen it.
If the bookmark is still where you created it then you should have write permissions to %APPDATA%.. Instead if it isn't you haven't.
If you don't have it check the old comments on using Firefox Portable + Flash. The idea is to install Firefox Portable on a folder where you have write permissions and then to install flash on it.
download flash players

The thing that is making all
The thing that is making all the headache is called “Allowed sites”.
You can find it if you click Tools – Options – Security – Exceptions and then you add adobe.com to your “Allowed sites” list.
the whole procedure is here:

No it isn't. Here we try to install Flash for Firefox on a restricted computer such as those available at Universities or at Work.
But...
I've found such tutorial online and it didn't help. why? Because flashplayer.xpt and NPSWF32.dll weren't in my downloaded file, although I renamed .xpi to .zip and extracted all the files, those two were missing, so I couldn't install the fp.

How to get it to work with firefox portable
Using the %appdata% will not work if you are trying to get it to work with firefox portable.
For firefox portable, you need to navigate to the \FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins directory in windows explorer and put the two files in there.
big thumbs up!!
Worked like a charm!!! Great work-a-round!
GODSEND!
Thank you so much for posting these instructions! My (university admin) office's IT "upgraded" our computer to an active directory (read: horribly restrictive environment) and I couldn't see any website requiring flash (couldn't install the debugger because, thank you IT "upgrade", I'm no longer able to d/l .exe files, etc, you know, because "there's a lot of bad things people can download without knowing" garbage). So this is a godsend. Literally. Thank you!
Great
Great Great work ... keep rocking .
