Installing Flash Player Plugin on Firefox without having Administrator Access or Premissions

Submitted by fabio on Mon, 2007-02-19 16:32.

The Windows computers available at my University permits login only by autenticated users (students) who don't have Administrator access and permissions.

Installing software on those PC is then not possible.

Recently they finally installed Firefox 2 but without the Flash plugins, which is absolutly useful/needed.

I then tryed to install the Flash Player using the "standard" way (click on the missing plugin link then install the plugin..). However without administrator plugins it was not possible to install.

Then I started doing some tests trying to install the plugin manually. Now I have it installed and working perfectly!

This is how I managed to install it without administrator permissions:

  1. Download the XPI archive of the Flash Player Plugin to your hard disk. XPI archives are only ZIP files containing the files used by the plugins.
  2. Extract the files in the archive
  3. Copy the files flashplayer.xpt and NPSWF32.dll to %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Plugins\ where
%APPDATA% is the folder which holds your applications profiles and settings. (You can open this folder simply choosing "Start → Run → Type in %APPDATA% → OK")
  4. Restart Firefox
  5. Enjoy your flash websites!

This has really helped me out at my workplace.

But I have a correction. With Firefox 3 I couldn't find a plugin folder under APPDATA

Instead it is in the firefox installation directory:

Mozilla Firefox\plugins

I dropped the files in there and it worked great.

Unfortunately if you don't

Submitted by fabio on Thu, 2008-07-03 16:04.

Unfortunately if you don't have permissions to write to your user application folder you won't be able to follow this procedure.

Anyway you should check that you are following the guide correctly as I doubt that you haven't rights on that folder.

You can try this: open firefox and add a bookmark, or change any configuration. Close it and reopen. If the bookmark or the configuration is still there then you have permission on your mozilla profile folder because to store the configuration or bookmark the program had to write there.

It helps a lot!!!

No.. I didn't tried with firefox 3, and I'm no more able to test it.

Anyway this procedure should work as well on Firefox 3.

A question.. if you are able to install Firefox 3 why do you have to use this procedure instead to just install the flash plugin the normal way? Maybe you are using a portable version of Firefox 3?

Yep, works fine in FF3 ;)

Try to create a bookmark on

Submitted by fabio on Fri, 2008-02-08 11:54.

Try to create a bookmark on your Firefox profile. If you are able to create it correctly the you should have write access to your Firefox profile folder.

Then you are probably trying to copy to an incorrect folder.. where you don't have permission on it.. Then follow the instructions on the article to correctly find your Firefox profile folder.

Instead, if it seems that you are unable to create a bookmark, you probably will not be able to install Firefox using the procedure detailed in the article.

The only things you can try is ask your systems administrators to install Firefox for you.

Rename the *.xpi to *.zip

If you are using XP or Vista it can handle zip files natively. Just rename the .xpi file to .zip and it should open without having to install any programs.

well.. yes.. you need an archive extractor to open the .xpi file above. But you can easily got around this problem. You can extract it at home with your PC and then put them to an USB pen drive or store on your web email.

Unfortunately I can't provide the extracted files directly from this website as I think it would violate the license of that files.

Seems that I'm able to view the videos on that website.

Just check that you are able to open any flash based website (eg. youtube). If you are able to view the videos there then your flash plugin is installed correctly.

So... if you are still not able to view the videos is probably an issue with your proxy or firewall.

how about divx plugin?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 2007-12-19 00:54.

how about integrate the divx plugin?

you can try this..

Submitted by fabio on Thu, 2007-12-20 17:47.

I think video codecs (as the divx plugin you are talking about) should be provided by windows only as libraries.. so I don't think the user is able to install them locally.

Probably the best workaround is copying on your windows home folder a video player which is able to play different video formats out of the box (it doesn't need any plugin installed on the operating system) but does not require installation.

You might want to try VLC - Video Lan Client. The version you have to get is the "Windows zip package" available from the VLC download page.

Once you get the above version, uncompress it, launch the application and try to display your videos.

Please note that I can't verify that the above method works correctly (I don't have access to any restricted Win computer at the moment).

Hope this helps.

or a similar website and click on the green install plugin sign at the bottom right....it prompts you to install the plugin without saying anything about admin access. its all handled by the browser itself. listen to dave matthews band and think about world peace...wooohooo!!!!
