Updated "Firefox 2 theme for Firefox 3" to Firefox 3.5 - version 0.9.4 beta out
The default Firefox 3/3.5 theme for Linux is, in my modest opinion, really ugly.
As soon as they rolled it out for Firefox 3 I reverted to the old Firefox 2 theme using an add on theme called Firefox 2 theme for Firefox. I used it for some months and I was really satisfied with it.
Unfortunately the theme seems abandoned, given the message displayed on its project page.
So, I started working on porting the theme to Firefox 3.5. Actually, as a comment of KhaFoo at the theme page pointed out, updating was pretty simple. Just a matter of modifying an entry in the install.rdf file.
I installed the updated theme and used for a couple of testing time and didn't noticed any problem. It just works for me.
I then contacted the current maintainter offering for help. Well.. he simply gave me the theme.
So, it seems that I'll be the new maintainer of the theme. That's cool! I always wanted to be more involved in the Mozilla community as I really think they are doing great things.. so.. this will be really a good start.
So.. let's begin, you find here attached the version 0.9.4 beta. It will soon be available on addons.mozilla.org.
Please report any issue you find using it. Thanks!

Cool
But still: I really like the new Firefox interface.
any chance to have a support for Windows?
Is it possible to use this new theme for Windows?
I can't find a way to apply .JAR file as a theme in Firefox running on Windows, so I assume this version is for Linux only. Is there any chance that you'll introduce an updated version of Classic FF2 theme for Firefox 3.5.xx?
It's such a pain in the ass to use new Firefox and to see this ugly interface ALL THE TIME... Ouch :(
the Jar file will work on
the Jar file will work on every OS system, even Windows.
In order to install it just follow this guide:
http://www.accessfirefox.org/Install_Addon_Manually.php .. See "Manually Install a Firefox Theme".
Let me know if you still have problems.
It's a great idea to port
It's a great idea to port this theme to 3.5. I have been waiting for this for long. Thanks a lot!
It would be great to keep the new '+' button to the right of the active tab that was introduced in firefox 3.5, though. Are you planning to work on the theme in the future?
For sure!
Yeah! I'm a user of the theme myself, that's why I'm maintaining it now. I already fixed some of the problems users reported (see http://www.varesano.net/contents/projects/firefox%202%20theme%20firefox%... ) and I plan to release a new version as soon as I fix a couple of bugs more.
I decided to drop the "+" tab button (I'm talking about the one on the right of the tabs, not the optional one near the home button) because in the original FF 2 theme there wasn't one. Moreover its feature can be easealy implemented simply by:
* double clicking on the zone where tabs are rendered but where there aren't one
* adding the optional "new tab" button (right click on the tool bar and customize)
* use CTRL + T
Anyway I'm open to discussion on this topic.. Let me know what you guys think about this.
New Tab button seems to exist anyway
Hi, not sure if it's just me. I'm using FF3.5.2 on Windows Vista with your new theme and if I move my mouse to the right of my right-most tab, there is a small button to add a new tab. It doesn't have the plus sign in it, but the button is still there.
Thanks for the port! I was heartbroken when I upgraded to 3.5 and was told the theme wasn't compatible.
Would you please try with
Would you please try with version 0.9.5? There was a problem with past versions. Last version should have it. Thanks.
Hello! First of all thank you
Hello!
First of all thank you very much for supporting this theme!
I dont like vision of firefox 3 too, but about the new button - i think it's useful. Because "new tab" button takes from space on tool bar and when there are more tabs opened, there is no free space, on which you could double click to open a new one. And using Ctrl+T ... its long and how to say - I am lazy to do that. But the decision is yours and I will like it anyway. So do what you think is better.
Good luck and thank you again!
