Firefox 2 theme for Firefox 3.x

The Firefox 2 theme for Firefox 3.x provides Firefox 3.x users the default Firefox 2 theme.

The theme is perfectly suited for all of the Firefox 3.x users which still think that Firefox 2 looked better than 3 and don't want to get used to the new look.

Development

Development progresses are regularly published on a Bazaar repository. You can access them, once you installed Bazaar, using the following command:

bzr checkout http://repository.varesano.net/ff2-default/trunk "{fd2f951f-77ea-4938-9493-0c892c027a13}"

This will generate a folder called {fd2f951f-77ea-4938-9493-0c892c027a13}. To install the theme simply move it to the extensions folder located within your profile folder. Then restart firefox.

Once you have a checkout of the repository and you think that your copy is outdated, you can update your version to the latest version with

bzr update #issued within the theme folder

You can see what the recent progresses have been with

bzr log -n0 http://repository.varesano.net/ff2-default/trunk

In case you want to see more informations on the progresses, you can access to more informations with

bzr log -n0 -v http://repository.varesano.net/ff2-default/trunk

Making your own modifications

If you want to make changes to the theme in a way that is "versioning software friendly" you have to convert your local checkout to a local branch with:

bzr unbind

Once you did so you'll be able to start modifying the code. Once you implement a new feature, fix a bug or anything else notable you can commit your changes to your local repository branch with:

bzr commit -m "Text describing your changes"

Once you did so you might want to share your modifications with me:

bzr send http://repository.varesano.net/ff2-default/trunk -o changes.patch

The above command will generate a file called changes.patch which will contains your modifications as well as your versions history, logs, etc. You can share it with me by simply mail the file to fvaresano at yahoo dot it.

If you have modified your local branch and you would like to update it to the last publicly available without loosing your modifications you can use:
bzr merge

Please, contact me if you need help with Bazaar or you want to actively contribute to the theme.

Style lacking for site identification button

Submitted by George (not verified) on Sat, 2009-11-14 01:27.

I use the theme on Ubuntu. Since upgrading from Firefox 3.0 to 3.5, I have a problem.

When accessing a secure site (HTTPS), a button appears in the address bar, right next to the favicon. This button identifies the website and allows for certificate verification.

For websites with "high assurance" certificates, the button is green and contains the name of the company. For regular certificates, the button contains the domain and it should be blue.

My problem is that the blue styling seems to be missing from the theme, so the button just looks like regular text in front of the URL.

Perhaps screenshots would make the matter easier to understand. Would you like me to send them?

Different Size Window for Bookmarking a Page in Firefox 3.5

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 2009-10-27 04:02.

The only problem that I have encountered is the width of the window that pops up when you bookmark a page in Firefox 3.5. The Firefox 2 theme makes the window much smaller in Firefox 3.5 as compared to Firefox 3.0.x. This makes choosing which folder you would like to place your bookmark very difficult since I can't see my folder names clearly. I have screenshots but I don't know how to upload them on here. I absolutely love the theme, but while version 0.9.6 beta 1 is functional on the Mac OS version of the Firefox, it uses the Firefox 2 Windows iconset. Thanks for your comment and for using the theme.

Unfortunately I don't have any Macs around.. that's why developing for Mac OS is pretty a problem.

In the past I used an Hackintosh to test the theme but it never been stable so I finally stopped using that.

So, until I find a usable Mac system I'll not be able to work a lot on the Mac version of the theme.

As usual, any code contribution or any help will be very welcome.

Small issue in Firefox 3.5.2

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 2009-09-07 10:25.

Small issue in Firefox 3.5.2 on linux:

In the privacy pane of the preferences window, if you have the dropdown menu set to either "Remember history" or "Never remember history", the links that appear below it to clear your history are no longer blue and underlined, as in the default theme.

In the DOM inspector, with the theme disabled, these links have the following css rules applied to them from chrome://browser/skin/preferences/preferences.css

.inline-link {
color: -moz-nativehyperlinktext;
text-decoration: underline;
}

.inline-link:not(:focus) {
outline-color: transparent;
outline-style: dotted;
outline-width: 1px;

With the theme active, these rules are gone, and the links appear just like ordinary text, although clicking on them still works.

Submitted by Ionut (not verified) on Sun, 2009-08-30 21:11.

i'm running windows vista sp1

i have been running it for over 8 months now and have made some tweaks to it, but none relating to its appearance.

i'm surprised you weren't aware of this. surely there are some other people with vista that tried this skin so how come no one's complained until now? i hope it's not because of some of the settings my OS has. i would love it if someone running vista would give a shout on the matter.

Finally get a VM with Vista on it. Now I'm able to test the theme also on Vista.

Making a theme compatible with each OS is really hard.

Anyway, the menu problem has been fixed in the last commit: you can get revision 11 from the repository or wait version 0.9.6.

okay, i have the development theme.. how do i use it?

Submitted by Joshua Rodman (not verified) on Tue, 2009-08-25 16:58.

I use a mac. I prefer the firefox 2 theme, but it doesn't work properly (as you know).

You suggest using the version from bazaar. I installed bazaar and grabbed the current trunk. It looks vaguely like a complete theme in there, but there's no README in the distribution or here on how to install it.

I'm a developer, but I'm not a Firefox developer. I could probably investigate how to create an xpi out of the theme files and feed it into Firefox, but my first 15 minutes of investigation haven't gotten me an answer.

It would be a nice touch if you could add, at the end of the bazaar steps, the briefest of descriptions on the steps to use it. I'd recommend putting that text in version control as well, myself.

Thanks much for all your already existing work improving on a good idea.

You have two options: use bzr

Submitted by fabio on Tue, 2009-08-25 18:02.

You have two options:

use bzr create an export of the theme directory:

bzr export --format=zip --root=.  ff2-default.jar
(issued from the trunk directory you have just downloaded)

Then an installable file called ff2-default.jar will be created.install the theme manually.

The other option would be to find the profile folder on your sistem. Within the extensions folder create a new folder called {fd2f951f-77ea-4938-9493-0c892c027a13} and copy all the contents of the trunk folder you downloaded to the newly created folder. Be careful with copying also the hidden files (those starting with dot).

The advantage of the second procedure is that you will be able to update the theme to the last development version available even if the theme is installed.

I'll insert these instruction into the web page and an README file.

Thanks for your contribution.

disappearances, changes, and altogether missings

Submitted by Amy (not verified) on Tue, 2009-08-11 02:58.

I've had three problems for the longest time, and I'm rather certain they all stem from this theme. (I'm running Mac OS X 10.4, btw.) If I hover the mouse over a tab's close X, it disappears so long as the cursor remains there. When doing this the site-specific favicon to its left changes to a dog-eared page icon, and it remains so ever after the cursor is moved. Also, the scroll bars are missing entirely. They still function, but it's very annoying to not know how long is a page or how far to the right it extends because you can't see them.
