Firefox 2 theme for Firefox 3.x

The Firefox 2 theme for Firefox 3.x provides Firefox 3.x users the default Firefox 2 theme.

The theme is perfectly suited for all of the Firefox 3.x users which still think that Firefox 2 looked better than 3 and don't want to get used to the new look.

Development

Development progresses are regularly published on a Bazaar repository. You can access them, once you installed Bazaar, using the following command:

bzr checkout http://repository.varesano.net/ff2-default/trunk "{fd2f951f-77ea-4938-9493-0c892c027a13}"

This will generate a folder called {fd2f951f-77ea-4938-9493-0c892c027a13}. To install the theme simply move it to the extensions folder located within your profile folder. Then restart firefox.

Once you have a checkout of the repository and you think that your copy is outdated, you can update your version to the latest version with

bzr update #issued within the theme folder

You can see what the recent progresses have been with

bzr log -n0 http://repository.varesano.net/ff2-default/trunk

In case you want to see more informations on the progresses, you can access to more informations with

bzr log -n0 -v http://repository.varesano.net/ff2-default/trunk

Making your own modifications

If you want to make changes to the theme in a way that is "versioning software friendly" you have to convert your local checkout to a local branch with:

bzr unbind

Once you did so you'll be able to start modifying the code. Once you implement a new feature, fix a bug or anything else notable you can commit your changes to your local repository branch with:

bzr commit -m "Text describing your changes"

Once you did so you might want to share your modifications with me:

bzr send http://repository.varesano.net/ff2-default/trunk -o changes.patch

The above command will generate a file called changes.patch which will contains your modifications as well as your versions history, logs, etc. You can share it with me by simply mail the file to fvaresano at yahoo dot it.

If you have modified your local branch and you would like to update it to the last publicly available without loosing your modifications you can use:
bzr merge

Please, contact me if you need help with Bazaar or you want to actively contribute to the theme.

a great theme, with one little mistake

Submitted by XT (not verified) on Wed, 2012-02-01 21:47.

I really like your theme, I just found one little mistake. When you use normal icons (not checking the "small icons") and text, the text is displayed next to the icon instead of below it. When you use "small icons", the text is below the icon, where it belongs. Would be great to fix this, thanks.

Also, on FF10, when you do mouseover on a link (or bookmark), you get no background on the URL on the bottom-left, so you usually cannot read it.

Fixed

Submitted by rctgamer3 (not verified) on Thu, 2012-02-02 15:42.

I fixed the text bug, thanks for reporting it :).
The link bug has been fixed in the 1.0pre1 release (which has been out for a while now).

Both fixes will also be in the final 1.0.0 release, which (if everything goes well) will be out somewhere next week.

Incompatible with "Edit Bookmark Plus 2.0.0"?

Submitted by Andy_P (not verified) on Sun, 2012-01-22 00:51.

Hi
I've been using your theme for years and don't want to lose it.
But I also used to use the "OpenBook" add-on and have had to replace that with "Edit Bookmark Plus 2.0.0" in FF9

When I change the theme from the 9.0.1 default back to yours, the Add bookmark box stays large but isn't scrollable and the tree view is the old tiny window.

This is it with your theme:

This is it with the default theme:

(Sorry, can't make the image tags work)

Further to my previous post....
I think I've solved it by using "Firefox 2 theme for Firefox 4+ v2.0.0"

Thanks for letting me know.
Which version of the theme were you using at the time? The latest beta version is 1.0pre2.
I think the problem lies with Edit Bookmark Plus. It looks like it does some hacky stuff that interferes with the theme.
I'll check if i can fix it later today. (Look for the 1.0pre3 update).

By the way, the theme you linked isn't ours. It's a theme someone else made. In my opinion it's just a couple of FF2-styled buttons put onto the default theme of Firefox, whilst our theme still uses actual Firefox 2 code/css.

In other news, if no important bugs/problems arise before tomorrow evening, i'll upload version 1.0 on Wednesday.

Yay, you updated!

Submitted by neminem (not verified) on Sun, 2011-12-04 17:39.

I like using Aurora - it's way faster in a lot of places than FF2.x or 3.x ever were. But I disliked the default 3 theme, disliked the 4 theme even more. The 2 theme I'd been using for 3 had a few issues in 4+ and nobody was updating it, but it mostly still worked, unlike this one. This one no longer has any of the issues it used to have, and also doesn't have the issues I found the other one having :D. Thanks!

Colorful Tabs incompatability

Submitted by Amy (not verified) on Fri, 2011-11-11 00:18.

My tabs appear colored with the default theme in Firefox 8, but they are all gray when I use Firefox 2, the theme, reloaded (0.9.9pre3). Is this an issue with this theme, the extension, or the browser version?

Colorful Tabs incompatibility

Submitted by rctgamer3 (not verified) on Fri, 2011-11-11 17:48.

Just installed Colorful Tabs. My tabs are now in >9000 different colors, lol.
Has a graphical incompatibility, Colorful Tabs readds the bottom bar (we do too, resulting in two of these bars).

I don't think it's possible to implement a fix without breaking the theme styles, so i made a Stylish userstyle to fix Colorful Tabs: http://userstyles.org/styles/56170/

Amy, as you're on 0.9.9pre3, you won't get stable releases such as the final 0.9.9, only development (alpha/beta/prerelease) updates of the next version.

"Once you install the development version, you will continue to get updates from this channel. To stop receiving development updates, reinstall the default version."

I've submitted an update (0.9.9) to AMO (addons.mozilla.org). Expect it somewhere next week, as it needs to be reviewed first. Also available HERE.

Thanks; not sure how I ended

Submitted by Amy (not verified) on Mon, 2011-11-14 17:38.

Thanks; not sure how I ended up with the pre3 version, but I updated to the stable version per your link. I tried using your Colorful Tabs fix but didn't see any changes. Guess I'll put up with undifferentiated tabs for now because I love this theme--can't tell you enough how much I appreciate your work keeping it updated!

Works for me. Tested on a clean/new Firefox profile.

Try starting Firefox (once) with the -purgecaches argument:
Start Menu -> Run:

firefox -purgecaches

If that doesn't work, remove the theme, ColorfulTabs, and the Stylish fix, restart, and reinstall in this order:
1. Firefox 2 theme
2. Colorful Tabs
3. Stylish fix.

Didn't work

Submitted by Amy (not verified) on Tue, 2011-11-22 17:51.

I'm on a Mac, so I can't do the "firefox -purgecaches" command (or if it can equivalently be done on a Mac, I don't know how to do so). I tried just clearing the cache within the browser and restarting, but that didn't work. I then followed your suggestion for the uninstall and reinstall steps, but my tabs are still uncolored. So thanks, but no-go.

Try this: Install Restartless

Submitted by rctgamer3 (not verified) on Wed, 2011-11-23 23:28.

Try this:
Install Restartless Restart. After it's installed, remove ColorfulTabs and the theme.
Go to Restartless Restart's options in the Add-on Manager, and check the "Disable FastLoad" button. Restart by using RR's restart (menu) option ((probably) under File).
Now install the theme, and do another RR restart. Install Colorful Tabs afterwards.

URL Hover?

Submitted by Harry (not verified) on Sat, 2011-11-12 06:26.

Once again, thanks for your awesome work on this. One problem I have is that when you hover over a link, the URL that shows up on the bottom left does not have a background. This makes it very hard to see on dark colored websites. Are you working on a fix for this bug?

Url Hover?

Submitted by rctgamer3 (not verified) on Sat, 2011-11-12 08:06.

Sorry, can't fix that bug. (Themes can only change the appearance, not the behavior afaik)

Just install the Status-4-Evar add-on, it puts the URL back in the statusbar. Also has some other nice settings you can tweak. I have even gone as far as to recommend installing/using Status-4-Evar by putting it in the theme's description.

Submitted by fabio on Sat, 2011-11-12 09:54.

I do actually think that this problem is fixable in the theme. The default theme for Linux has a nice light gray background on the url and that's enough to make it readable on dark websites. It won't displays on the status bar but will be at least readable.

0.9.9pre1

Submitted by rctgamer3 (not verified) on Fri, 2011-10-28 14:59.

Just wanted to let everybody i've released a new version of the theme (version 0.9.9pre1). It's still beta, but most things should work.
One notable bug though, don't exit/restart Firefox with a tab pinned (app-tab) otherwise the pinned tab will overlap the left (blue) scroll-button icon. Just repin the tab to fix it.

It can be found in the Beta/Development channel on AMO (addons.mozilla.org):
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/firefox-2-theme-for-firef...

Fixed a dozen or more bugs after 0.9.9pre1 was released, expect a new prerelease somewhere this weekend. Might even try doing a full release/update (probably 0.9.9), depending on how many bugs i manage to squat/fix this weekend :)

Hi Varesano,

I couldn't wait until you created a Firefox 4 compatible version of your theme, so i tried fixing it myself.

Result:
Image: http://puu.sh/27hQ

Things i've modified so far:

  • Fixed the tabs (tab bottom css rule was removed in 4.0)
  • Fixed tab height error
  • Fixed the Tools/Options pictures, were buggy
  • Addons-page: Modified icons and background

Still to-do:

  • Didn't know how to fix the (CTRL-K) searchbar background
  • Statusbar/status4evar bar, give the statusbar a border (/inset?)
  • New Tab and All Tabs button
  • Tab groups page
  • Unknown icons in toolbars/status/status4evar show up as toolbar.png
  • Tab overflow somehow raises the tab height
  • Addons page > notifications, icons etc.
  • Un-combine Reload/Stop yes/no?

Bugs:

  • Addons (about:addons), addons page uses up the whole screen?

Here's my modified .jar so far (bumped version to 0.9.8.5).

This thread was also a great help:

I hope this helps you a bit, otherwise i'll just maintain a unofficial build in the meantime.

It works almost perfectly in Firefox 5. The only thing that bothers me is that the google search bar isn't the right height in the middle. Do you know if rctgamer3 has updated since your post?

Submitted by rctgamer3 (not verified) on Wed, 2011-09-14 09:01.

A quick update, fixed a couple of bugs:

  • Fixed the search box bug
  • Statusbar now has a top border
  • New Tab button(s) fixed
  • Fixed Javascript alert/window

Busy with:

  • (View) Page Info doesn't have proper buttons at the top
  • Addons page

Not done yet/unknown:

  • Tab groups page
  • Proper FaviconizeTab support (looks ugly atm)

@Harry: I don't have a (proper) website, I'll just post updates every now and then (here on the blog).
New version of the theme (probably) at the end of the week ;)

the Firefox 2 theme is my prefered themeset for all my computers because I dispise the rounded backward/forward buttons, plus i've been using firefox since it got popular with the techies (with FF 1.9), and I really really really like firefox even over the faceless (and addonless) Google Chrome and Apple Safari and over the corrupt Internet Explorer (that Microsoft pushes us with). Please bring us the FF 2 theme for FF 4, it would be greatly appreciated by all those who love this theme.
