Firefox 2 theme for Firefox 3.x

The Firefox 2 theme for Firefox 3.x provides Firefox 3.x users the default Firefox 2 theme.

The theme is perfectly suited for all of the Firefox 3.x users which still think that Firefox 2 looked better than 3 and don't want to get used to the new look.

Development

Development progresses are regularly published on a Git repository on GitHub.
> GitHub project page

They were previously located on Fabio's Bazaar repository, but the whole project has moved to Git(Hub) as I (rctgamer3) found Git easier to use and because it encourages others to work on it.

You can access them, once you have installed git (or a Git GUI like SmartGit) using the following command:
git clone https://github.com/rctgamer3/ff2-default.git "{fd2f951f-77ea-4938-9493-0c892c027a13}"
You can also clone it directly if you have either GitHub for Windows/Mac installed.

This will generate a folder called {fd2f951f-77ea-4938-9493-0c892c027a13}. To install the theme simply zip the folder, and drag it to the Add-ons Manager (recommended), or move it to the extensions folder located within your profile folder. Then restart Firefox.

Once you have cloned the repository and you think that your copy is outdated, you can update your version to the latest version with:
git pull #issued within the theme folder

You can see what the recent progresses have been with:
git log #issued within the theme folder

Making your own modifications

Once you have cloned the repository you'll be able to start modifying the code.

Theme versions are stored on different branches. For example, version 1.0.3 is stored on the 1.0.3 branch. To contribute to a specific version (newest beta branch preferred), you should change to the branch currently being worked on (check GitHub when you're unsure):

git checkout <branch name here>

Once you implement a new feature, fix a bug or anything else notable you can commit your changes to your local repository with:

git commit -m "Text describing your changes"

Once you did so you might want to share your modifications with me. You can either send me a pull request (on GitHub), or do the following:

git format-patch -1

The above command will generate a .patch which will contains your last commit as well as your versions history, logs, etc. You can share it with me by simply mailing the file to rctgamer3 at hotmail dot com.

If you have modified your local branch and you would like to update it to the last publicly available without losing your modifications you can use:

git fetch

Please, contact me if you need help with Git or if you want to actively contribute to the theme.

FF 21 problem on OSX

Something has gone wrong since FF 21 on OSX.

There is a gap between the titlebar and the address bar on the normal windows, and the opposite problem on private browsing windows.

This displayed fine in FF 20.

Your theme is great, except there's something wrong visually with the awesome bar, when you have the AddThis addon installed.

Can you fix this?

I don't like the original Firefox theme because of the transparent Aero style everywhere => It is just ugly!

Please, stop spamming this page. The theme works and installs just fine here, but due to some weird bug on Mozilla's side the theme keeps failing to install/update.

There are clear instructions on the theme's page if you still can't get it to work properly.

Instructions:

I don't want to spam your page.
I just noticed a few other very important things I'd like to share. I have another computer with Firefox 20.0.1 that used your old version 1.0.3 and it worked without any problems! And it worked without the extra (checkcompatibility-addon) you mentioned above!

Here is the screenshot proof:
http://rylex.de/pics/FirefoxTheme2_1.jpg

So Firefox checked itself for updates... and it looked like that:
http://rylex.de/pics/FirefoxTheme2_2.jpg

There it says it is old version 1.0.3 and it works! But it will be updated on next restart of Firefox!

After the restart version 1.0.4 is not working! Look at the picture here:
http://rylex.de/pics/FirefoxTheme2_3.jpg

My only question is: Why did 1.0.3 work without any problems and the new 1.0.4 will only work with this checkcompatibility addon? I even tried to install the theme from this page here using the link on top. Firefox does NOT install it. The only possibility to get it back to work is using the extra addon.

I don't want to install this addon - is there a possibility to get a download link to the old 1.0.3 version, which is working with 20.0.1?

I will not write anything more about this topic - only if you really wish because I don't want to spam this page. I just thought it might be important that 1.0.3 really works and the new version does NOT work!

I'm afraid it really does not work. I tried to uninstall/reinstall it again and restarted firefox/checked for updates and so on. It doesn't work for me :(

Take a look at the picture here:

Very sad day today because this theme doesn't work anymore for me. Firefox upgraded from version 20.0 to 20.0.1.
The theme, which still worked with version 20.0 now doesn't work anymore with version 20.0.1. I uninstalled it and searched for updates and re-installed it. Doesn't work still "incompatible", Firefox says.
What else could I do to get this theme working again?
I have Windows 7, Firefox 20.0.1 and I love this theme! You can answer me via email if you like.

Firefox 20 Compatibility Fix

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 2013-04-19 05:18.

@rtcgamer3

In your install.rdf you have minVersion set at [20.*]

[*] shouldn't be used in minVersion, it produces problems. Set your minVersion to [20.0] and the extension will install without problems, no need for the Disable Add-on Compatibility Check addon you're currently linking to as a workaround.

Won't change a thing

Submitted by rctgamer3 (not verified) on Fri, 2013-04-19 08:11.

Changing the minVersion to 20.0 won't change a thing.
The reason the theme (and other themes) wouldn't install or update was because somebody at Mozilla broke the update mechanism.
I have used the wildcard (20.* etc.) for almost two years and it never gave any problems. (Note: if i were to set it to 20.0, older beta versions would be left out, as 20.0 wouldn't match 20.0a2 (and other versions) any more. This doesn't matter for Firefox 20, but is always the case for all Beta/Aurora/Nightly version numbers)
They applied the fix yesterday (2013-04-18) so the theme should be able to install correctly starting today.
[Note that the install.rdf is completely ignored when it comes to min/maxVersion numbers, the numbers I specify on AMO always have higher priority.]

Technical details: Persona's/Lightweight Themes are now located at addons.mozilla.org (AMO). During the migrate, they changed the update mechanism so that Persona's (background-theme) would be recognized as themes (theme), and themes (theme) would be recognized as "complete themes"(complete-theme). But because Firefox only wanted to accept themes as themes, the whole update mechanism broke and they had to revert this change.

Thanks for the in-depth

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 2013-04-19 17:49.

Thanks for the in-depth reply. Though the theme from AMO still does not install on 20.0.1, currently stating it as incompatible, but extracting the xpi and changing the minVersion works for me as a workaround though in the meantime, until Mozilla gets the fix pushed out.

And I must've been reading some outdated docs, because everything I've read states [*] is considered an infinitely high number (not a wildcard), thus why it's a bad idea for minVersion, but okay for maxVersion.

Anyways, cheers for the info, love the theme.

live bookmarks not "marked as read" in FF16

Submitted by Jens (not verified) on Thu, 2012-10-18 16:07.

I love this theme, can't live without it. But there's a big bug in FF16:
When using the live bookmarks (rss-feeds), with the normal theme the one I read are marked (grey rss-icon). With this theme, they don't change if I read them or not. This is bad. Can you change it?

Live Bookmarks

Submitted by rctgamer3 (not verified) on Sat, 2012-10-20 22:16.

I know what you mean.
Due to a(n API) change in Firefox 13, visited items no longer show the website's favicon whenever an item has been visited.

I added the feed you were using, and added an icon to show what it would look like: http://i45.tinypic.com/awxri8.jpg
What do you think?

(Unrelated question: Why is your nav-bar (Back,Forward,Reload, url-bar etc) so tall? It should'nt be that tall, unless you added some random add-on that causes it to be so tall.)

The addon "Lesezeichenleiste

Submitted by Jens (not verified) on Sun, 2012-10-21 10:25.

The addon "Lesezeichenleiste verstecken" (https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/hide-bookmarksbar) to show/hide the booksmark-bar (nice tool if you have several lines of bookmarks!) does have a large icon (the fifth in the screen) when put in the nav-bar. I don't know why, sure it's that addon and not the theme. But no issue with that :).

I just updated from 12 to 16 and a search for this shows that nobody likes the changes they did for 13. By some remark somewhere I found that in the normal theme it's ok with FF16, but not with this theme.

Your solution looks very fine to me. It's noteable with orange/grey and will get live back to use the feeds again! Big thumps-up!

Hide Bookmarks Toolbar

Submitted by rctgamer3 (not verified) on Mon, 2012-10-22 12:29.

The author of the "Hide Bookmarks Bar" ("Lesezeichenleiste verstecken") add-on apparently didn't know how to add (toolbar)icons properly, as he forgot the most crucial CSS line needed, defining how large the icon needs to be.

It cost me only 6 lines of code to fix this bug. I'll e-mail the author and ask him if he can fix it. (If i don't get a reply, or if he doesn't want to fix it, I'll implement a fix for it in the theme. I'll let you know.)

I added the (visited) icon to the theme. It'll be available in the next beta, and after that, in the next stable release.

Bazaar isn't used anymore, i moved the whole project to GitHub.

I haven't had the time to release a update, because I've been very busy trying to implement the new features (Social API/ClickToPlay) before Firefox 17's release date, November 20. Expect a beta in the next couple of days. Stable version hopefully somewhere next week.

Note: I haven't heard from the developer, so I'll try to implement the fix into the theme.

It's not a bug, it's a feature! (I guess)

Submitted by rctgamer3 (not verified) on Wed, 2012-10-03 08:13.

Hmm, tough question. I actually thought of adding them some time ago, but then I remembered Firefox 2 didn't have this feature. Because this feature was introduced in Firefox 3.*, I was hesitant to add it because it wouldn't have the "looks" of Firefox 2 anymore.

I'll think about it.

In other news: Stable version 1.0.* will (hopefully) be out later this week, (hopefully) before Firefox 16 will be available, because FF16 breaks some thing in the theme. It'll probably be called 1.0.2, but as a lot of code has been changed/updated/added, I -might- skip a number and call it 1.0.3 or 1.0.5 or something.

Digging (back) even further, I found out that the file causing problems (menulist.css, Windows version) was replaced by the gnomestripe/Linux version in version 0.9.3 (!).

I (re)added OS X/Linux specific versions and can confirm it fixes the bug on both OS. (tested with Ubuntu 12.04 and virtual OS X 10.7.3)

I really like your theme, I just found one little mistake. When you use normal icons (not checking the "small icons") and text, the text is displayed next to the icon instead of below it. When you use "small icons", the text is below the icon, where it belongs. Would be great to fix this, thanks.

Also, on FF10, when you do mouseover on a link (or bookmark), you get no background on the URL on the bottom-left, so you usually cannot read it.

Incompatible with "Edit Bookmark Plus 2.0.0"?

Hi
I've been using your theme for years and don't want to lose it.
But I also used to use the "OpenBook" add-on and have had to replace that with "Edit Bookmark Plus 2.0.0" in FF9

When I change the theme from the 9.0.1 default back to yours, the Add bookmark box stays large but isn't scrollable and the tree view is the old tiny window.

This is it with your theme:

Thanks for letting me know.
Which version of the theme were you using at the time? The latest beta version is 1.0pre2.
I think the problem lies with Edit Bookmark Plus. It looks like it does some hacky stuff that interferes with the theme.
I'll check if i can fix it later today. (Look for the 1.0pre3 update).

By the way, the theme you linked isn't ours. It's a theme someone else made. In my opinion it's just a couple of FF2-styled buttons put onto the default theme of Firefox, whilst our theme still uses actual Firefox 2 code/css.

In other news, if no important bugs/problems arise before tomorrow evening, i'll upload version 1.0 on Wednesday.

Yay, you updated!

I like using Aurora - it's way faster in a lot of places than FF2.x or 3.x ever were. But I disliked the default 3 theme, disliked the 4 theme even more. The 2 theme I'd been using for 3 had a few issues in 4+ and nobody was updating it, but it mostly still worked, unlike this one. This one no longer has any of the issues it used to have, and also doesn't have the issues I found the other one having :D. Thanks!
