My quad is back to life!

Submitted by fabio on Tue, 2012-05-01 23:20.

Back in late November I had a big crash with my quadcopter, then with the cold season and the huge workload of the new job at the university I never had the mood to fix it..

But, as soon as spring arrived, I had to fly it again. So, I finally been able to spend a couple of nights fixing it and a couple of days ago it airborne again!

Following a small video on one of its flights. I spent a good amount of time on MultiWii PID tuning. To make my life easier I decided to plug on the quad one of my LibreTooth boards so that I could connect it via Bluetooth from my Android phone. There is a wonderful Android app called MultiWii Configurator which allows you to PID tune your MultiWii copter directly from your phone. With this setup, it's very easy to get to very stable settings.

A flying monster for aerial video shooting

Today, I've been at the 4th Multirotors and FPV Day in Bologna. I really had a good time.. I had a chance to meet many of the Italian 4copters friends and make new ones.

Of course, I've seen some really awesome developments (some of them based on my FreeIMU ;-)).. but the copter in the following video was absolutely incredible. Awesome!

My first quadcopter flights!

Submitted by fabio on Sun, 2011-08-28 12:04.

As you probably know, I've spent some of my few free time to build a quadcopter.. I bought some components, I had a frame as gift from a friend, mounted everything and finally I went to fly it.

This video documents my very fist flights with it.. this is really nothing easy! And I'm still learning so don't laugh at me! But, as you can see from the last part of the video, my thumbs are getting more and more experienced ;-)

My Quadcopter, almost ready

Submitted by fabio on Tue, 2011-08-23 17:25.

So here it is. After I bought all the components and after the first assembling, here is a picture of the current state of my quadcopter.

I do now have all the components connected, the propellers mounted and everything is almost ready to fly. Right now I'm facing some ESC programming headaches: never did this before and all this beeping is getting me crazy!

Stress testing FreeIMU v0.3.5_MS on flight

Submitted by fabio on Mon, 2011-08-15 11:25.

Our friend Warthox, which is one of the early testers of FreeIMU v0.3.5_MS on his quadcopters platforms, just published an awesome video of his tests with FreeIMU v0.3.5_MS.

The video really stress test FreeIMU on MultiWii stabilization software, doing loops, flips, acro flight, launching the quad, no stick input.. awesome. Thanks Warthox!

Getting into the MultiCopter world!

Submitted by fabio on Wed, 2011-08-03 23:32.

I designed FreeIMU for human-computer interaction.. but hey.. a good tool may be used in many different applications. So, it turned out that FreeIMU is actually a pretty good sensor board for using in flying machines, especially on multicopters applications.

Just one year ago, I wasn't experienced at all in all the quadcopter/multicopter stuff but as soon as I published FreeIMU, people from that world got in contact with me.. I think I now have quite some friends from the quadcopter world..

Well, it finally happened that I've been more and more interested in multicopter till almost being passionate about them even if I never flyed one of them..

But then, I went to the flying field with johnxp and I've seen and tried flying one of them.. well.. what can I say? That's awesome!

So, here I am.. two days ago, with the help of johnxp, I bought all the stuff to build my very first quad as well as the radio, battery chargers and miscellaneous stuff.

So, here is what will be my setup:

What do you expert quadcopters pilots think about it?

FreeIMU is flying great!

My friend marco just published another video of his quadcopter flying using FreeIMU. Awesome result and I really like the GoPro HD video.
